Amatonormativity is the widespread societal assumption that everyone desires, and should pursue, an exclusive, long-term romantic relationship. It positions romantic love as the ultimate life goal and the highest form of human connection, elevating it above platonic friendships, familial bonds, and staying single. Practical examples include legal or tax benefits reserved for married couples, societal pressure or pity directed at single individuals, and cultural narratives where a successful "happy ending" inherently requires finding "the one".
