Defined Benefit (DB) schemes promise a specific income for life upon retirement, calculated as a formula based on salary and years of service (e.g. 1/60th of salary per year worked). The employer manages the fund and bears the risk; if investments underperform, the company must plug the gap.

Defined Contribution (DC) schemes involve the employee and employer paying into an individual pot, which is then managed by a third party. The value at retirement depends on contributions and investment growth. The employee bears the risk; if the market crashes, pension value drops.

The public sector (e.g. civil servants, academia) uses DB schemes, while there has been a strong adoption of DC schemes in the private sector.
